In a decree signed by Yeltsin on 10 December 1992, the Chechen-Ingush Republic became the Chechen Republic and the Ingush Republic "within the make-up of the Russian Federation" (Rossiyskaya Gazeta 29 Dec. 1992). Interviewed in Argumenty I Fakty, Ruslan Aushev, candidate for president of the Ingush Republic, stated that "Ingushetia will remain a part of Russia. We have held a referendum and said that we 'vote with our hands and feet' to stay in Russia" (Feb. 1993).
