1.

The South Lebanon Army (SLA) is the Christian militia working with the Israeli Defence Forces in the "Security Zone" of South Lebanon. Since the Israeli abduction of the Hezbollah leader, Sheikh Abdel-Karim Obeid, in July 1989, the threat of avenge by Hezbollahis in the region has increased. [ Jonathan Karp, "Israeli Role Deepens in South Lebanon Despite Vow to Leave", Reuters, 29 September 1989.] Bint Jbeil is the site of a 40-bed hospital built by the Israelis.

No information on the number of casualties or clashes that have occurred in the region is available to the IRBDC at this time.
2.

All militias which control territory in Lebanon exert their authority over the residents of these areas. Although Hezbollah has been implicated in many of the kidnappings in Lebanon over the past few years, no information concerning routine retaliation against family members of rival militia soldiers was found.
