Information on which identification documents identify people as Gypsies [ROM21057.E]

In a telephone interview of 5 July 1995, the Vice-President of the Romanian Helsinki Committee in Bucharest provided the following information. There is no reference to ethnic group on passports or identity cards; Gypsy is regarded as an ethnic group. The Vice-President could not provide information on whether the holder's ethnic group is indicated on other identification documents. Information on whether identification documents other than identity cards and passports identify the holders as Gypsies could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
