About 300,000 ethnic Somali Kenyans live in
Kenya, and their main clans are Daarood, Dir, Hawiye and Ogaadeen
(Ethnologue 1992, 285). While Inter Press Service puts the
number at 380,000 people and mentions the Ajuran and Degodia as
clans of Kenya's ethnic Somalis (12 Apr. 1994; ibid. 12 July 1993),
Kenya: A Quest for Prosperity names only the Darood and
Hawiye (1994, 167). Somali-Kenyans make up 2.29 per cent of the
Kenyan population and they are primarily found in the North Eastern
Province (Encyclopedia of the Third World 1992, 970). For
further information on Somali-Kenyans and their clans, please refer
to the attachments from The Shaping of Somali Society and
State of the Peoples.
