WHO's emergency health response in Iraq

24 February 2015 - Iraq, particularly the Kurdistan Region, is currently facing two parallel displacement crises, hosting more than 235 000 Syrian refugees in addition to a staggering 2.2 million internally displaced people.

The country’s health system is under severe strain as the spike in population has resulted in increased health needs. WHO is supporting both the Federal Government and the Kurdistan Regional Government to boost the level of quality health care services available to refugees and IDPs, and to increase access to care by ensuring the mobility of health services. WHO is instrumental in coordinating the efforts of health partners active in the response and provides technical assistance to partners to bolster response capacity.
