July 29, 2015

Kazakh authorities say a woman has been detained in the eastern town of Zyryanovsk on suspicion of propagating international terrorism.

Kazakhstan's Committee for National Security said on July 29 that the suspect, whose identity was not revealed, had recruited local residents for possible participation in the activities of international terrorist organizations.

The names of the terrorist organizations have not been reported.

According to the officials, "books with banned contents, video, and audio materials propagating religious intolerance" were found in the suspect's home.

The detained woman is facing charges of propagating terrorism, solicitation of participation in activities of a terrorist group, and recruitment of individuals into extremist activities.

Kazakh authorities have expressed concerns earlier that hundreds of the country's citizens are fighting along Islamist militants in Syria and Iraq.
