However, according to available sources, economic riots effectively took place in Lagos, Benin city, Enugu, Ibadan and the coastal city of Port Harcourt at the end of May 1989, following the adoption of an economic austerity programme by the government of Nigeria (The New York Times 4 June 1989; Keesing's June 1989, 36727).
