Local Official Injured In Kabardino-Balkaria Assassination Attempt

A local official in the Kabardino-Balkaria region in Russia's volatile North Caucasus has been injured in an apparent assassination attempt.
 
Local police said unknown assailants opened fire on the morning of May 28 on the car of the head of the republic's Baksan district, Khasan Sizhazhev, as he drove to his office.
 
Officials said Sizhazhev was shot in the abdomen and had been hospitalized.
 
Casualties are regularly reported due to assassination attempts against local officials and shoot-outs and bombings involving suspected Islamic militants and security forces in the Russian North Caucasus regions of Chechnya, Daghestan, Ingushetia, and Kabardino-Balkaria.
