Update to Response to Information Request AZE26439.E of 29 April 1997 on whether a new citizenship law has been passed and, if so, a copy of the law; information pertaining to an ethnic Azeri who was born in Azerbaijan, resided in Azerbaijan and was a citizen of Azerbaijan until the mid-1990s when he left Azerbaijan and subsequently acquired another citizenship, and who did not apply to renounce his Azerbaijani citizenship: whether the government of Azerbaijan still considers this person to be a citizen of Azerbaijan; whether there are provisions for dual citizenship in Azerbaijani legislation and, if so, the article(s) and law(s) that indicate them; whether the government of Azerbaijan recognizes this person as a foreign citizen, and whether there are any foreign citizenships that the government of Azerbaijan would not recognize with regard to this person; the determining article of the Citizenship Law if the government of Azerbaijan determines that this person has lost his Azerbaijani citizenship; the likelihood of his application for restoration of Azerbaijani citizenship succeeding if the government of Azerbaijan determines that this person is no longer a citizen of Azerbaijan; whether there are any foreign citizenships that would influence the decision to grant or deny restoration of citizenship if the government of Azerbaijan determines that this person is no longer a citizen of Azerbaijan; the length of time for the application process for citizenship restoration (from date of application to date of notification); the fee associated with the application of citizenship restoration and a copy of the application form [AZE28994.E]

Response to Information Request AZE28724.F of 4 February 1998 states that, based upon a telephone interview with an official of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Washington, DC, the new law on nationality has not yet been passed by the parliament. Information on the other above-mentioned subjects could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
