Information on whether Mahmud Abdul Aminu is still the president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and if not, what has happened to him [NGA12909]

Student leader Malam Mahamud Abdul Aminu, president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), was held at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison in June 1991 (Africa Watch Oct. 1991, 33; BBC Summary 27 June 1991). In its October 1991 report, Africa Watch indicated that Aminu was facing charges of rioting and destruction of property at the University of Jos (34-35).

A May 1992 article mentions the name of Olusegun J. Mayegun as the national president of the NANS (West Africa 24 May 1992). According to recent sources, Mayegun was arrested by police and taken away from Lagos University on 11 June 1992 (West Africa 28 June 1992; Libération 12 June 1992). He was later granted bail but expelled from Lagos University (West Africa 19 July 1992).

Additional information on the current situation of the two men is currently unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa.
