Three Charged Over Turkey Mining Disaster
May 18, 2014
ATurkish court has ordered three suspects detained over last week's mine disaster to remain in custody on charges of causing deaths and negligence.
The three suspects were not named, but said to be the plant manager and two mine engineers.
The three were taken into custody along with a further 22 earlier on May 18.
The detentions came five days after a fire sent deadly carbon monoxide down into the mine in the western Turkish town of Soma, killing 301 people.
The disaster has sparked protests across Turkey, with anger directed at the mine owners and the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
