Information on the funding sources of the Centre for Social and Legal Studies (Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales, CELS) [ARG14604]

Information on the sources of funding of the Centre for Social and Legal Studies (CELS) is not currently available to the DIRB. CELS is forwarding the DIRB a copy of its 1992 annual report. The document will be forwarded to you immediately upon receipt.

A researcher at the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights stated that the Lawyers Committee has worked extensively with the Centre for Social and Legal Studies, and is not aware of any particular CELS affiliations or dependency on the government or a political party in Argentina (24 June 1993). The same source stated that CELS is viewed by many regional and international human rights organizations as one of the most respected human rights non-government organizations in Argentina, and the Lawyers Committee considers it to be a reliable source of information (Ibid.). The researcher stressed, however, that the Lawyers Committee and CELS usually focus on legal affairs and institutions, while other organizations such as Amnesty International may concentrate on political violence and repression (Ibid.).

Additional and/or corroborating information on this subject could not be found among the sources currently available to the DIRB.
