The attached South China Morning
Post article (18 Aug. 1993) and Xinhua report (19 Aug. 1994)
provide information on anti-corruption campaigns carried out in
Hunan Province in 1993-1994, but do not refer specifically to
investigations and arrests of government employees or party
officials. However, the South China Morning Post article
does refer to the "cracking down" against "violation of laws and
discipline," and adds that "more than 59,000 cases of violation of
law as well as party and government discipline" were found in the
first half of 1993 in different Chinese provinces, including Hunan
(18 Aug. 1993).
This Response was prepared after
researching publicly accessible information currently available to
the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does
not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular
claim to refugee status or asylum.
