Twin Suicide Attack Hits Baghdad

May 12, 2016

Iraqi officials say a twin suicide bombing hit a police station in a suburb in Baghdad, killing at least five policemen.

The attack on May 12 comes a day after the deadliest violence in the Iraqi capital this year killed 93 people and wounded 165 in a wave of bombings that was claimed by the Islamic State (IS) extremist group.

IS militants also claimed the May 12 attack in the western suburb of Abu Ghraib.

A police officer said the first bomber blew himself up at the station's gate, followed by the second who detonated his explosives inside the building.

The explosions also left 14 policemen wounded.

A day earlier, a powerful explosion struck a crowded outdoor market in the Shi'ite district of Sadr City during the morning rush hour, killing at least 63 people and wounding more than 80 others.

In the afternoon, two more car bombs targeted police checkpoints and left at least 30 dead.
