A suicide bomber has struck a funeral just north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, killing and wounding dozens.

Officials said at least eight people were killed and 20 wounded by the December 29 blast near the mainly Sunni town of Taji, 22 kilometers north of Baghdad.

Other reports said 10 people were killed.

The victims were attending the funeral of a man who had two sons fighting for progovernment militias known as Awakening Councils.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. However, the Islamic State (IS) militant group has targeted Sunnis that are cooperating with the Shi'ite-led Iraqi government. 

Islamic State militants control large parts of northern and western Iraq.
