Syrian Security Forces Reportedly Disperse Demonstration In Damascus

March 16, 2011

Reports say Syrian security forces have dispersed a demonstration in front of the Interior Ministry in the capital, Damascus.

Witnesses said dozens of people gathered in front of the ministry to demand the release of political prisoners.

The witnesses said security forces charged the gathering with batons, and that at least one protester was injured and several were detained.

On March 15, some 40 people chanting political slogans marched in Damascus in what was said to be the first public protest against President Bashar al-Assad since popular uprisings began in the Arab world.

Police broke up the group and arrested several protesters.

Al-Assad, who succeeded his father 11 years ago, is also head of the Ba'ath party, which has been in power since 1963.
