AUG 23, 20014 Iran Dissidents Released on BailBy THE ASSOCIATED PRESSFiled at 7:20 p.m. ET TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iranian authorities have released four political dissidents from jail in the past two days, the wife of a jailed activist said Thursday. Marzieh Mortazi Langroudi also said authorities had told the families of ``three or four'' other jailed activists to prepare bail for their imminent release. She did not know when they would be freed. Mahmoud Omrani, Hossein Rafeei, Ali-Reza Rajeei and Masoud Pedram were arrested during security crackdowns in March and April and later charged with trying to overthrow Iran's Islamic establishment. They have all been released on bail, Langroudi told The Associated Press. The men are members of the National Religious Alliance, a political group opposed to Iran's hard-line establishment, Langroudi said. She had no further details. Iranian authorities were not immediately available for comment. Langroudi and her husband, dissident Habibollah Peyman, were arrested earlier. Langroudi was released in March; Peyman remains in custody. Langroudi said authorities had not allowed her to visit her husband, who needs medical attention for a prostate problem. Reformist allies of Iranian President Mohammad Khatami are locked in a power struggle with hard-liners who control unelected institutions, including the judiciary and security forces. Hard-liners have closed down more than 40 mostly pro-reform publications and jailed dozens of reformist journalists and political activists. |
