June 10, 2014

Police in Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Daghestan say they killed a man after a shooting incident along the Buinaksk-Untsukul highway late on June 9.

Police say a patrol approached a parked car and asked the driver to present his identification papers. They say the man in the car opened fire on the officers, who returned fire and killed him.

No casualties among police were reported.

Police say they found an AK-47 assault rifle in the car.

The man’s identity and motives are being investigated.

Daghestan and other republics in Russia's restive North Caucasus region have been plagued by violence linked to Islamic extremism and organized crime for years, with scores of people being killed and injured.
