Seven Alleged Members Of Banned Islamic Group Detained In Tatarstan

Seven alleged members of a banned Islamic group have been detained in Russia's Tatarstan.

The Federal Security Service (FSB) in Tatarstan says the suspects were detained on October 20 after searches were conducted in several towns and cities across the mostly Muslim-populated region.

The FSB says they propagated teachings of the Islamic group Tablighi Jamaat (Messenger's Assembly) in local mosques.

Tablighi Jamaat was founded in India in 1926, and describes itself as a pacifist organization that is not involved in politics.

The group was branded as extremist and officially banned in Russia in May 2009.

It is also outlawed in the majority of Central Asian countries.
