Taliban militants have ambushed a convoy of Afghan government security forces in an attack officials said killed 22 soldiers and policemen.

The October 13 attack occurred in the northern Sar-e Pul Province as the convoy was heading to reinforce besieged government forces in a neighboring district.

Sar-e Pul Governor Abdul Jabar Haqbeen said that in addition to the 22 dead, eight members of the security force were wounded and seven others were taken captive by the Taliban.

Haqbeen added 12 army and police vehicles were "totally destroyed" in the attack.

Meanwhile, Afghan authorities said at least three people were killed and nine others injured in two other attacks on October 13.

Deputy Interior Minister Ayub Salangi said a suicide bomber targeted a NATO convoy in Kabul, killing one civilian and injuring three others.

NATO said one of its vehicles was attacked in Kabul, adding there were no immediate reports of any casualties among members of the military coalition.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement that two civilians were killed and six others wounded in a suicide bombing in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

The attack took place next to a hospital in Shinwar district, the statement said.

The Defense Ministry said an Afghan Army officer was wounded and two army vehicles were damaged in the bombing.

Taliban militants claimed responsibility for the attacks.
