Russia Says Four Militants Killed In Daghestan

April 15, 2014

Russian forces have killed four suspected militants in Daghestan during a security operation.

The National Antiterrorist Committee said they had engaged the suspects on April 15 who subsequently fled into a building on the outskirts of Makhachkala and refused to surrender.

They subsequently let two children and the wife of one of the men out of the building after security forces surrounded the area.

A shoot-out reportedly followed between the two sides and, as a result, the building collapsed, killing everyone inside.

Violence remains common in Daghestan and other republics in Russia's North Caucasus region, which also includes Chechnya, Kabardino-Balkariya and Ingushetia.

Islamic militants and criminal groups routinely target Russian military personnel and local officials.

Russian officials have not yet said which group the four people killed belonged to.
