Annan Spokesman Says Syria Accepts Peace Plan

March 27, 2012
A spokesman for Kofi Annan, the United Nations-Arab League special envoy for the Syrian crisis, has announced that the Syrian government has accepted Annan's plan for ending the conflict.

Spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said on March 27 that the Syrian government had sent Annan, the former UN secretary-general, a letter informing him of its acceptance of his plan.

Annan's plan calls for an immediate end to the violence, humanitarian access to besieged areas, and for dialogue between the government and opposition.

Annan's proposals have been endorsed by UN Security Council members, including Russia and China, who earlier blocked two council resolutions condemning Assad's regime.

The United Nations estimates more than 8,000 people have been killed in violence in Syria since protests against President Bashar al-Assad's regime began one year ago.
