General information on Shilluk (Chollo) ("Forgotten People: Shilluk Kingdom of Sudan") [#27702][ID 20314]

"The Shilluk, or the Chollo as they refer to themselves, are Nilotic people who live near the banks of the White Nile River in the Upper Nile region centered around the city of Malakal. They number about 600,000 and are the third most numerous ethnic group in the south after the Dinka and Nuer.  Living near the Nile, the Shilluk rely on agriculture, livestock, and fishing for their livelihood. The majority of the Shilluk are Christians, while a small number continue to practice their indigenous religion.  Unlike most other ethnic groups in southern Sudan the Shilluk are ruled by a single political/religious figure, and thus their territory is called a kingdom."
