Background information on the ethnic group of the Tiv [ID 15465]
Quoted after:
Levinson, David: Ethnic Groups Worldwide, A Ready Reference Handbook, Oryx Press, Arizona, 1998
"The Tiv follow a segmentary lineage variety of social organization. A strong patrilineage links large parts of the group into named segments. All political life, land tenure, law, and other aspects of life were related to this organization. The third and most common form of social organization consists of small villages and households that were once autonomous. During the colonial period these small units were absorbed into wider administrative units. Hausaization has spread into the area, especially in the north, and exerted great influence on the people. Missionary and British influence has also effected changes in the cultural life of the people. (Levinson, 1998, 157-158)"
