Background information on the ethnic group of the Igbo (Ibo) [ID 15467]
Quoted after:
Levinson, David: Ethnic Groups Worldwide, A Ready Reference Handbook, Oryx Press, Arizona, 1998
"The Igbo (Ibo) are located mainly in the southeastern section of Nigeria although they have spread throughout Nigeria. Their language is a Kwa language of the Niger-Congo language family. The Igbo are mainly Christian. Severe land shortages in the region, combined with a high achievement motivation, have led Igbo to excel in contemporary Nigeria. Igbo success is also attributable to their openness to outside influence. Unlike many other Nigerian groups, the Igbo places great emphasis on individual achievement, and children are encouraged by their parents to succeed. This emphasis on success and eagerness to get ahead often irritates other Nigerians, who term the Igbo "pushy". Competition with members of other ethnic groups has increased the Igbo sense of ethnic unity, while encouraging similar feelings in those who compete with them. (Levinson, 1998, 158)"
