Office of People's Party stormed by police after violent protests of 13 April ("Armenian Opposition Vows More Protests Despite Government Crackdown") [#21468], [ID 15571]
"Government officials said 30 people were seriously injured when police charged about 2,000 opposition protesters in central Yerevan in the pre-dawn hours of April 13. Opposition sources asserted that hundreds of people were injured, adding that most avoided seeking medial treatment out of fear of government reprisals, including arrest. Eyewitnesses added that police appeared to target journalists covering the demonstration.
Armenian police said 115 people were detained during the April 13 melee, with over 70 being released within 24 hours. Authorities maintained that police officers were provoked into charging the demonstrators. Numerous eyewitnesses contradicted the official account, saying protestors never made a move to break through a cordon set up by police on Marshal Baghramian Avenue.
In the aftermath of the April 13 clash, police raided the offices of leading opposition movements – the National Unity Party (AMK), the Republic Party and the People’s Party of Armenia – reportedly arresting numerous activists on charges ranging from "disruption of public order" to an attempt to "seize power." Police also attempted to search the homes of several prominent opposition leaders. The police action prompted top opposition figures to go into hiding to avoid potential detention. Only Republic Party leader Aram Sarkisian remained underground on April 14.
Kocharian defended the unprecedented crackdown, saying through a spokesman that his opponents "endangered the country’s constitutional order," adding that the protesters "did not obey the legitimate orders of police officers."
Opposition leaders appeared undaunted by the government clampdown. Sarkisian, the Republic Party leader, indicated that the April police action had dashed any opportunity for dialogue between the opposition and Kocharian on reaching a political settlement. "He [Kocharian] has only made sure that he will be tried for all of his sins and there will be no more compromises," Sarkisian said.
The opposition characterizes Kocharian’s administration as illegitimate, insisting that the he rigged presidential and parliamentary elections in 2003. Sarkisian added that the opposition alliance planned to organize more rallies to press for Kocharian’s resignation. That stance was affirmed by People’s Party leader Stepan Demirchian, who proclaimed; "The will of our people [opposition supporters] has not been broken.""
