PDPA/People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan, 1988 re-named into Hizb-i Watan (see below) Founded on 1 January 1965 by 31 comrades Secretary-General: only Muhammad Taraki Deputy: Babrak Karmal Party-organ: “Khalq” [people], published by Taraki as of April 1966 Womens organisation of the PDPA: “Sazmani Dimukratiki Zanani Afghanistan” (Democratic Womens Organisation of Afghanistan). The womens organisation was considered a bridge (Pol-i Guzari) to future integration of women in the PDPA. Members: urban middle classes, in particular: students of the Kabul University, appointees, teachers, officers, but also intellectual Pashtuns from agrarian areas Ideology: Marxism, Leninism, orientated on the SU, anti-American Domestically: anti-feudalistic, centralistic Program: overcoming feudalism, land reform, educational reform, equal rights for men and women as for ethnic groups
